Arkansas treats cremation as a permitted method of disposing of a deceased animal. What it does not do is license pet crematories, require them to track your individual pet, or hand you a certificate proving the ashes are yours.

Cremation is a permitted disposal method — and that is all Arkansas says
Arkansas treats cremation as a permitted method of disposing of a deceased animal. What it does not do is license pet crematories, require them to track your individual pet, or hand you a certificate proving the ashes are yours. Most states give pet owners almost nothing here — no licence, no inspection, no required paperwork. Knowing precisely what your state does and does not provide is what turns a vague worry into a specific question you can ask a provider.

We vet so you don’t have to.
We audit local providers annually — documentation, true individual cremation, reputation. Only one local provider per city earns the recommendation: the one we’d trust with our own pet.

Pickup, cremation, and return of ashes — and you know what’s happening at every step. One call. They take it from there. Get back to grieving — not researching.
Why a trusted provider matters
Pet cremation isn’t the most transparent industry, and the provider you choose decides what happens to your pet.
-
Permitted is not the same as regulated.
The Arkansas State Board of Embalmers and Funeral Directors licenses crematories for human remains. No Arkansas statute requires a pet crematory to register, track your pet, or provide documentation. So a provider can be entirely lawful and still owe you nothing on paper — which is why what you ask for in writing carries the whole weight here.
-
No state agency confirms the ashes are your pet's.
This is true in Arkansas and in most of the country. Whatever protections exist here, none of them involves someone checking, after the fact, that a cremation sold as private was actually individual. That verification is procedural and yours to request — which is why the questions below matter more than the statute.

Burial rules usually carry a time limit.
Where states set conditions for burying an animal, they almost always include a window measured in hours or a day or two rather than an open-ended permission. It is worth knowing yours before you need it, because the clock generally starts at death rather than when you feel ready to act.

Local ordinance sits on top of state law.
Almost every state that addresses pet burial leaves the detail — depth, setbacks, whether it is allowed at all in a dense area — to city and county government. Check your own municipality rather than relying on a statewide summary, because in a metro area the local rule is usually the binding one.

Does Arkansas regulate pet cremation at all?
It permits it without regulating it for consumers. Arkansas treats cremation as a lawful method of disposing of a deceased animal, but there is no state statute requiring a pet crematory to register, to track your individual pet, or to give you a certificate confirming the ashes are your pet's. The State Board of Embalmers and Funeral Directors licenses crematories for human remains, and that authority does not reach pets.
Can I bury a pet in my backyard in Arkansas?
In most cases yes, but the rule that binds you is local rather than statewide. Arkansas has no pet-specific state burial law setting a depth or setback for a companion animal in your yard. The figure people often cite — a roughly two-foot, 100-yard rule from Arkansas administrative code — is a livestock disposal rule and does not apply to a dog or cat. Check Little Rock or Pulaski County ordinance before you dig.
What is the most useful question to ask here?
Ask for everything in writing, because nothing else is written down for you. With no registration requirement, no tracking mandate and no certificate requirement in Arkansas law, the quote and the confirmation you obtain yourself are the only record that exists. Ask for the cremation type, the all-in price at your pet's weight tier, confirmation your pet is alone in the chamber, and a numbered ID tag from pickup to return.
What does “private cremation” legally guarantee?
In most states, nothing by itself. No regulator defines the term, and only 63 of the 1,224 providers in our 2026 review — about 5% — hold IAOPCC accreditation, the one pet-specific standard. Some providers use private for partitioned cremation, where several pets share a chamber separated by dividers. Both are legitimate services; the failure is only when the difference is not made clear. Ask whether your pet is the only animal in the chamber for the full cycle, and get the answer in writing.
What is the difference between an air permit and a consumer licence?
An air permit authorises the equipment to operate and governs emissions — opacity, registration, what leaves the stack. A consumer licence would govern the service: how your pet is identified, tracked, and returned. Most states have the first and not the second, which is why a provider saying they are permitted may be entirely truthful and still be describing something with no bearing on your pet. It is always fair to ask which one they mean.
