Pet Cremation in Arkansas: Laws, Costs & How to Choose a Provider

Pet cremation in Arkansas is legal and unrestricted as a way to lay your pet to rest, but the state does not license pet crematories or set a consumer standard for them, and most providers price by weight rather than posting a number online. So the two things worth doing are simple: get the all-in price in writing, and confirm a private cremation means your pet alone.

We are Hallowed Paws, an independent resource for pet owners. We do not run a crematory and we have no provider of our own to sell you. We read the actual rules and report what we find. Here is the honest version for Arkansas.

What Arkansas law says about pet cremation

Arkansas treats cremation as a permitted method of disposing of a deceased animal. What it does not do is license pet crematories or hold them to a consumer-protection standard. There is no Arkansas statute that requires a pet crematory to register, track your individual pet, or hand you a certificate proving the ashes are really your pet’s. The Arkansas State Board of Embalmers and Funeral Directors licenses crematories that handle human remains; that licensing does not reach pet cremation.

This is not the same as “unregulated and dangerous,” and it does not mean Arkansas providers are untrustworthy. Most are careful, and many follow stricter standards voluntarily. It simply means the legal safeguards a grieving family might assume exist mostly do not, so the verification falls to you. Arkansas is in the majority here: in our 50-state law review, only seven states have any pet-cremation consumer law, and Arkansas is not one of them.

The practical takeaway: in Arkansas, the standard a provider meets is the one they choose to meet. Your job is to ask the questions that confirm it, which we cover below.

What pet cremation costs in Arkansas

Arkansas providers almost always price by your pet’s weight rather than by a flat dog-or-cat rate, because weight drives the time and handling involved. Few publish a full price online, which is the norm nationwide: in our 2026 study of 118 providers across 12 metros, nearly half published no price at all. You are expected to call, often while you are grieving, and accept the number you are given.

Because we could not source a reliable, statewide Arkansas-specific price range, use our national medians as an anchor, then confirm locally:

  • Private (individual) cremation: around $300 as a national median, with your pet’s ashes returned. Larger dogs run higher.
  • Communal cremation: around $200, with no ashes returned to the family.
  • Aquamation (water-based cremation): around $299, where offered.

Those are anchors, not quotes for your specific provider. The sticker is also rarely the whole story: home pickup or transport fees and weight surcharges are common and frequently are not mentioned until after you have booked. The single best protection is to get the all-in total in writing — base price, your pet’s weight tier, pickup, and any add-ons — before you agree to anything. Can you bury a pet in your backyard in Arkansas?

In most cases, yes, but the rule that matters is local, not statewide. Arkansas has no pet-specific state burial law that sets a depth or setback for a companion animal in your yard. The figure people often cite — a roughly 2-foot, 100-yard rule found in Arkansas administrative code (2 CAR §121-102) — is a livestock disposal rule and does not bind backyard pet burial.

That leaves backyard pet burial to city and county ordinance, which varies across Arkansas. Inside city limits, for example in Little Rock or Fayetteville, local rules are more likely to restrict or prohibit it; in rural counties there is often more latitude. Before you dig, check your municipality’s animal or health code, choose a spot well away from wells and water, and bury deep enough to deter scavenging. Our state-by-state burial law map lays out how Arkansas compares and what “local only” means in practice.

Where to find pet cremation in Arkansas

Pet cremation services operate across Arkansas’s larger population centers, where you will usually find both standalone pet crematories and veterinary clinics that arrange cremation. The state’s biggest cities and metros include:

  • Little Rock and North Little Rock (central Arkansas)
  • Fayetteville, Springdale, and Rogers (Northwest Arkansas)
  • Fort Smith (western Arkansas, on the Oklahoma line)
  • Jonesboro (northeast Arkansas)

If you are outside these metros, a local veterinary clinic is usually the fastest way to reach a cremation provider, and many offer home or clinic pickup. Hallowed Paws does not yet have dedicated city pages for Arkansas, so the names above are a starting point for where to look, not an endorsement of any single provider.

How to choose a pet cremation provider in Arkansas

Because Arkansas does not regulate pet crematories, a short checklist does the work the law leaves undone. Reputable providers will pass all of it without hesitating:

  1. Get the price in writing. Ask for the all-in total — base price, your pet’s weight tier, pickup, and any add-ons — before you commit. A provider confident in their pricing will give it to you plainly.
  2. Confirm “private” means your pet alone. Ask, in writing, whether your pet is the only animal in the chamber for the full cremation cycle, and whether the ashes returned will be only your pet’s. The word “private” is not regulated in Arkansas, so do not rely on the label.
  3. Ask for an ID that matches at drop-off and return. A numbered tag should stay with your pet from intake to the moment the ashes come back, with the ID on the returned remains matching what was recorded when you handed your pet over.
  4. Ask to see the facility. A provider willing to show you where the work happens, or to let you witness, is one signaling they have nothing to hide.
