Arkansas treats cremation as a permitted method of disposing of a deceased animal. What it does not do is license pet crematories or hold them to a consumer-protection standard. There is no Arkansas statute that requires a pet crematory to register, track your individual pet, or hand you a certificate proving the ashes are really your pet’s. The Arkansas State Board of Embalmers and Funeral Directors licenses crematories that handle human remains; that licensing does not reach pet cremation.

This is not the same as “unregulated and dangerous,” and it does not mean Arkansas providers are untrustworthy. Most are careful, and many follow stricter standards voluntarily. It simply means the legal safeguards a grieving family might assume exist mostly do not, so the verification falls to you. Can you bury a pet in your backyard in Arkansas?

In most cases, yes, but the rule that matters is local, not statewide. Arkansas has no pet-specific state burial law that sets a depth or setback for a companion animal in your yard. The figure people often cite — a roughly 2-foot, 100-yard rule found in Arkansas administrative code (2 CAR §121-102) — is a livestock disposal rule and does not bind backyard pet burial.

That leaves backyard pet burial to city and county ordinance, which varies across Arkansas. Inside city limits, for example in Little Rock or Fayetteville, local rules are more likely to restrict or prohibit it; in rural counties there is often more latitude. Before you dig, check your municipality’s animal or health code, choose a spot well away from wells and water, and bury deep enough to deter scavenging. 3. Ask for an ID that matches at drop-off and return. A numbered tag should stay with your pet from intake to the moment the ashes come back, with the ID on the returned remains matching what was recorded when you handed your pet over.
4. Ask to see the facility. A provider willing to show you where the work happens, or to let you witness, is one signaling they have nothing to hide.
