Private cremation nationally runs a median of $182–$390 by weight against $100–$175 for communal, a gap of about $100 at the entry tier. The premium buys one thing: your pet alone in the chamber, with the identification needed to return their ashes to you.

Pet cremation isn’t the most transparent industry, and the provider you choose decides what happens to your pet.
If you want certainty rather than assurance, attending the cremation is the only method that gives it. Witness fees vary enormously — we recorded published add-ons from $75 in Colorado to $525 in Virginia. Most families will not want to attend, and that is entirely reasonable. But it is worth knowing the option exists and roughly what it costs before you decide.
Across the 1,224 providers in our 2026 review, just 63 hold IAOPCC accreditation — the one pet-specific standards body in the industry. That is not an accusation; most providers are careful people doing difficult work well. It means the assurance behind the word private is usually the provider's own, so the questions you ask are the verification.
A heavier body takes longer in the chamber and burns more fuel, so most providers use two to four weight tiers. The spread between the lowest and highest tier on the same service commonly runs $100–$300, which is why asking for your pet's specific tier removes most of the uncertainty in one question.
Witnessed cremation typically adds $50–$200 over the standard private price, and custom urns or engraving run $50–$400 or more billed separately. None of this is a trick — but it is why two quotes that look far apart may describe the same service. Ask for one itemised all-in figure.

Pet cremation coverage across Richmond area.
That is what private cremation should mean, and in most of the country the only thing standing behind it is the question you asked and the answer you got in writing. Ask it. A good provider will not mind.
Connect with our trusted Richmond providerAmong Virginia providers that publish pricing, private (individual) cremation clusters around a median of $195–$370, with the full published range running $99–$487. Communal, where no ashes are returned, runs lower at $50–$300 published. Price tracks your pet's weight most of all — ask which tier your pet falls into and what that tier costs.
Some providers offer it, and Virginia has one of the more expensive published witness fees we found — an add-on of $525 at one provider, against $75 at the cheapest we recorded nationally. Practices vary: some let you see your pet placed into the chamber and start the cycle, others offer a viewing room. It is the most direct way to know that private meant private. Most families choose not to attend, which is entirely reasonable — but ask early, because it needs scheduling.
Not for consumers, as far as we can verify. The crematory licensing rules we can confirm in Virginia, at 18 VAC 65-20-435 under the Board of Funeral Directors and Embalmers, are written for human remains. We found no Virginia rule verifying that your pet was cremated individually or that the ashes returned are theirs. We state that as what our review found rather than as certainty — but either way the practical advice is the same.
It should mean your pet is the only animal in the chamber for the full cycle, and that the ashes returned are theirs. But no regulator defines the term in most of the country, and some providers use it for partitioned cremation — several pets in one chamber separated by dividers. Both are legitimate services at legitimate prices; the failure is only when the difference is not made clear. Ask the specific question rather than trusting the label.
Four questions, all reasonable, all worth asking in writing. Is my pet the only animal in the chamber for the full cycle? Do you use a numbered ID tag that stays with my pet from pickup to return, and will the number match the ashes? What documentation comes back? And may I witness it? A provider comfortable answering all four is telling you something useful — and many will offer before you ask.
Rarely. Only 2 of Virginia's 52 providers offer aquamation — about 4%, among the lowest availability of any state in our review, against 15% nationally and 42% in Colorado. If the water-based process is what you want, establish availability before planning around it, and expect a longer transport than families in Washington, Oregon or Colorado would face. For most Richmond families, private flame cremation is the practical route to having ashes returned.
It is not standard, and the price varies enormously. Published witness add-ons in our review ran from $75 in Colorado to $525 in Virginia — the highest we recorded. Only about 5% of the 1,224 providers we reviewed mention witnessed cremation at all. So it is a genuine option rather than a routine one: ask early, because it needs scheduling, and ask what the fee is before assuming it is nominal.
