Your pet is the only one in the chamber, and the ashes returned belong to your pet alone. Most Pittsburgh families choose this when they plan to keep their pet’s ashes.

Of the 64 Pennsylvania providers we reviewed in 2026, 10 published full pricing online. Pricing genuinely varies by weight and service — but the result is that you do not know what you will pay until you are already on the phone, on the worst day of your year.
A 10-pound cat and a 90-pound dog do not cost the same to cremate — a heavier body takes longer in the chamber and burns more fuel. Most providers use two to four weight tiers, and the spread between the low and high tier on the same service commonly runs $100–$300.
Pennsylvania's median published communal price is about $45, the lowest of any state in our review. That is genuinely good news for families on a tight budget. It sits alongside the fact that no Pennsylvania agency licenses pet crematories for consumers, which is exactly why asking for written confirmation of the service matters here.
Vet clinics often bundle cremation into the euthanasia invoice. It is genuinely convenient at a moment when arranging it yourself is close to unthinkable — but it sometimes carries a markup, and you are free to arrange your own provider instead.

Because they are not required to. In our 2026 review of 64 Pennsylvania providers, 10 — 16% — published full pricing, and 62% published none at all. Pricing genuinely varies by weight and service type, which is part of the reason. But the effect is that you cannot compare before you engage.
Not currently. The State Board of Funeral Directors regulates the cremation of people, not pets. That gap drew statewide attention in 2025, when prosecutors charged a Pittsburgh-area operator who they allege took payment for private cremations, disposed of animals in a landfill, and returned ashes that were not the owners' pets. Those are allegations. In response, lawmakers introduced the Companion Animal Cremation Consumer Protection Act (HB 1750); the House passed it unanimously in March 2026, but it is awaiting Senate action and is not yet law.
It is available but uncommon — 7 of the 64 Pennsylvania providers we reviewed offer aquamation, about 11%. Aquamation is a gentler water-based alternative to flame cremation. It is not reliably cheaper; nationally our medians for the two overlap.
Usually yes, but the binding rule is local. Pennsylvania sets no statewide standard for routine backyard pet burial, so Pittsburgh and Allegheny County ordinance govern. Keep the grave clear of wells and watercourses and deep enough to deter wildlife, and check your municipality before you dig.
