Private (individual) cremation means your pet is cremated alone and the ashes returned are theirs. Around Peoria it runs a median of $201–$305 by weight. The Companion Animal Cremation Act (815 ILCS 318) gives Illinois pet owners two rights almost nobody uses: a written explanation of services before anything begins, and a signed certification when ashes are returned stating the cremation was carried out as described.

The Companion Animal Cremation Act (815 ILCS 318) gives Illinois pet owners two rights almost nobody uses: a written explanation of services before anything begins, and a signed certification when ashes are returned stating the cremation was carried out as described. Private cremation nationally runs a median of $182–$390 by weight against $100–$175 for communal, a gap of about $100 at the entry tier. The premium buys one thing: your pet alone in the chamber, with the identification needed to return their ashes to you.

Pet cremation isn’t the most transparent industry, and the provider you choose decides what happens to your pet.
Most states leave you asking a provider to confirm in writing what they intend to do. Illinois requires them to certify, in writing and under signature, that they did it. A false or misleading explanation, a knowing failure to provide one, or a knowingly false certification is a business offence the Attorney General can pursue, with fines starting above $1,000.
Across the 1,224 providers in our 2026 review, just 63 hold IAOPCC accreditation — the one pet-specific standards body in the industry. That is not an accusation; most providers are careful people doing difficult work well. It means the assurance behind the word private is usually the provider's own, so the questions you ask are the verification.
A heavier body takes longer in the chamber and burns more fuel, so most providers use two to four weight tiers. The spread between the lowest and highest tier on the same service commonly runs $100–$300, which is why asking for your pet's specific tier removes most of the uncertainty in one question.
Witnessed cremation typically adds $50–$200 over the standard private price, and custom urns or engraving run $50–$400 or more billed separately. None of this is a trick — but it is why two quotes that look far apart may describe the same service. Ask for one itemised all-in figure.

That is what private cremation should mean, and in most of the country the only thing standing behind it is the question you asked and the answer you got in writing. Ask it. A good provider will not mind.
Connect with our trusted Peoria providerAmong Illinois providers that publish pricing, private (individual) cremation clusters around a median of $201–$305, with the full published range running $60–$700. Communal, where no ashes are returned, runs lower at $60–$350 published. Price tracks your pet's weight most of all — ask which tier your pet falls into and what that tier costs.
Ask for both documents by name. Before services begin, request the written explanation of services the Act requires — it should describe what you are buying, including the cremation type. When the ashes come back, request the signed certification stating the cremation was carried out as described. Neither is a favour; both are statutory entitlements under 815 ILCS 318. A provider who does not know what you are referring to is telling you something, and one who produces them without hesitation is too.
Somewhat. Fifteen of 61 Illinois providers publish full pricing — about 25%, against 18% nationally. That is better than average but well short of Oklahoma's 70% or Nevada's 55%, so you will still be asking in most cases. Illinois was also the highest-publishing state in our earlier price-transparency comparison at about 30% for base prices — the two figures measure slightly different things, so treat both as directional.
It should mean your pet is the only animal in the chamber for the full cycle, and that the ashes returned are theirs. But no regulator defines the term in most of the country, and some providers use it for partitioned cremation — several pets in one chamber separated by dividers. Both are legitimate services at legitimate prices; the failure is only when the difference is not made clear. Ask the specific question rather than trusting the label.
Four questions, all reasonable, all worth asking in writing. Is my pet the only animal in the chamber for the full cycle? Do you use a numbered ID tag that stays with my pet from pickup to return, and will the number match the ashes? What documentation comes back? And may I witness it? A provider comfortable answering all four is telling you something useful — and many will offer before you ask.
It comes down to one question: do you want the ashes back? If yes, private is the only service that returns them. If no, communal is an honest choice at a national median of $100–$175, and no lesser goodbye — a great many families choose it, and providers handle it with the same care. What we would push back on is being sold private at a moment you cannot think clearly, on the unspoken suggestion that the cheaper option is unkind. It is not.
