California's Cemetery and Funeral Bureau licenses crematories for human remains only. Advocates have proposed bringing pet cremation under the Veterinary Medical Board with tagging and camera requirements — a proposal, not current law. Private cremation nationally runs a median of $182–$390 by weight against $100–$175 for communal, a gap of about $100 at the entry tier. The premium buys one thing: your pet alone in the chamber, with the identification needed to return their ashes to you.

Pet cremation isn’t the most transparent industry, and the provider you choose decides what happens to your pet.
It is worth being clear about the gap, because the proposal is sometimes reported as though it were in force. Today there is no California licence, inspection regime or consumer standard for pet cremation. The tagging and camera requirements that have been proposed would address exactly the verification problem this page is about — but until they pass, the questions you ask are the only mechanism.
Across the 1,224 providers in our 2026 review, just 63 hold IAOPCC accreditation — the one pet-specific standards body in the industry. That is not an accusation; most providers are careful people doing difficult work well. It means the assurance behind the word private is usually the provider's own, so the questions you ask are the verification.
A heavier body takes longer in the chamber and burns more fuel, so most providers use two to four weight tiers. The spread between the lowest and highest tier on the same service commonly runs $100–$300, which is why asking for your pet's specific tier removes most of the uncertainty in one question.
Witnessed cremation typically adds $50–$200 over the standard private price, and custom urns or engraving run $50–$400 or more billed separately. None of this is a trick — but it is why two quotes that look far apart may describe the same service. Ask for one itemised all-in figure.

That is what private cremation should mean, and in most of the country the only thing standing behind it is the question you asked and the answer you got in writing. Ask it. A good provider will not mind.
Connect with our trusted Oakland providerAmong California providers that publish pricing, private (individual) cremation clusters around a median of $220–$400, with the full published range running $99–$700. Communal, where no ashes are returned, runs lower at $50–$300 published. Price tracks your pet's weight most of all — ask which tier your pet falls into and what that tier costs.
Not for consumers. The Cemetery and Funeral Bureau, under the Department of Consumer Affairs, licenses crematories, crematory managers and remains disposers — but only for human remains. As reported by NBC Los Angeles, advocates have proposed placing pet cremation under the California Veterinary Medical Board with tagging and camera requirements. That is a proposal. Treat any provider describing itself as state-licensed as referring to something that does not cover your pet, and ask what the licence actually is.
We can report it but not explain it. California has the largest provider pool in the country and one of the lower publication rates — only 7 of 77 publish full pricing, about 9%, against 18% nationally. Scale has not produced transparency here. The practical consequence is that the Bay Area gives you genuine choice and almost no published information to choose with, so gathering three quotes is realistic and worth doing.
It should mean your pet is the only animal in the chamber for the full cycle, and that the ashes returned are theirs. But no regulator defines the term in most of the country, and some providers use it for partitioned cremation — several pets in one chamber separated by dividers. Both are legitimate services at legitimate prices; the failure is only when the difference is not made clear. Ask the specific question rather than trusting the label.
Four questions, all reasonable, all worth asking in writing. Is my pet the only animal in the chamber for the full cycle? Do you use a numbered ID tag that stays with my pet from pickup to return, and will the number match the ashes? What documentation comes back? And may I witness it? A provider comfortable answering all four is telling you something useful — and many will offer before you ask.
It comes down to one question: do you want the ashes back? If yes, private is the only service that returns them. If no, communal is an honest choice at a national median of $100–$175, and no lesser goodbye — a great many families choose it, and providers handle it with the same care. What we would push back on is being sold private at a moment you cannot think clearly, on the unspoken suggestion that the cheaper option is unkind. It is not.
