Wyoming bars human crematories from cremating pets
Under a Wyoming Board of Funeral Service rule, 035-6 Wyo. Code R. Ch. 6 §6-11, a facility designed for human remains may not be used to cremate pets. Pet cremation has to happen in a separate, dedicated facility. Most states give pet owners almost nothing here — no licence, no inspection, no required paperwork. Knowing precisely what your state does and does not provide is what turns a vague worry into a specific question you can ask a provider.

We vet so you don’t have to.
We audit local providers annually — documentation, true individual cremation, reputation. Only one local provider per city earns the recommendation: the one we’d trust with our own pet.
-
You reach the right provider.
Fill out the form below. We pass your information to the Cheyenne provider we would trust with our own pet — and they answer your questions directly, including what documentation you will receive.
-
Your pet is cared for.
Pickup, cremation, and return of ashes — and you know what’s happening at every step. One call. They take it from there. Get back to grieving — not researching.
Why a trusted provider matters
Pet cremation isn’t the most transparent industry, and the provider you choose decides what happens to your pet.
-
Your pet is not sharing equipment with human funeral work.
That is a real and unusual protection. Most states are silent on whether the same chamber can serve both, leaving it to the operator. Wyoming requires physical separation by rule, and the Board of Funeral Service enforces it. It does not verify that your individual pet was cremated alone — but it settles a question most owners never think to ask.
-
No state agency confirms the ashes are your pet's.
This is true in Wyoming and in most of the country. Whatever protections exist here, none of them involves someone checking, after the fact, that a cremation sold as private was actually individual. That verification is procedural and yours to request — which is why the questions below matter more than the statute.
-
Burial rules usually carry a time limit.
Where states set conditions for burying an animal, they almost always include a window measured in hours or a day or two rather than an open-ended permission. It is worth knowing yours before you need it, because the clock generally starts at death rather than when you feel ready to act.
-
Local ordinance sits on top of state law.
Almost every state that addresses pet burial leaves the detail — depth, setbacks, whether it is allowed at all in a dense area — to city and county government. Check your own municipality rather than relying on a statewide summary, because in a metro area the local rule is usually the binding one.

Can a Wyoming funeral home cremate my pet?
Not in the same facility. Under 035-6 Wyo. Code R. Ch. 6 §6-11, a facility designed for human remains may not be used to cremate pets — pet cremation must take place in a separate, dedicated facility. It is one of the clearest structural protections in any state we have reviewed. It is worth asking a Wyoming provider to describe their setup, both because you are entitled to a straight answer and because the rule means there is a straight answer to give.
Can I bury a pet in my backyard in Wyoming?
Usually yes, and the rule is specific. Under Wyoming Statute 35-10-104 you may bury a dead animal on your own land if you do it within 48 hours and cover it with at least two feet of soil; the alternative the statute offers is moving the carcass at least half a mile from the nearest home. Ignoring it carries a fine of up to $100. For a pet owner on their own property the practical reading is simple: within two days, under two feet.
Does Wyoming verify that private cremation is private?
No. The separation rule governs facilities, not individual cremations, and Wyoming has no consumer-licensing system that inspects pet crematories or confirms the ashes returned are your pet's. That gap is not the same as danger — most Wyoming providers are honest and the separation rule is enforced. But the individual-chamber question and the numbered ID tag are still yours to ask for, in writing.
What does “private cremation” legally guarantee?
In most states, nothing by itself. No regulator defines the term, and only 63 of the 1,224 providers in our 2026 review — about 5% — hold IAOPCC accreditation, the one pet-specific standard. Some providers use private for partitioned cremation, where several pets share a chamber separated by dividers. Both are legitimate services; the failure is only when the difference is not made clear. Ask whether your pet is the only animal in the chamber for the full cycle, and get the answer in writing.
What is the difference between an air permit and a consumer licence?
An air permit authorises the equipment to operate and governs emissions — opacity, registration, what leaves the stack. A consumer licence would govern the service: how your pet is identified, tracked, and returned. Most states have the first and not the second, which is why a provider saying they are permitted may be entirely truthful and still be describing something with no bearing on your pet. It is always fair to ask which one they mean.
