New York is one of very few states that genuinely licenses pet crematoria. Under General Business Law Article 35-C, a pet crematorium operated for a fee needs a licence from the Department of State — which means the word private here sits behind a credential you can actually verify.

New York is one of very few states that genuinely licenses pet crematoria. Under General Business Law Article 35-C, a pet crematorium operated for a fee needs a licence from the Department of State — which means the word private here sits behind a credential you can actually verify. Private cremation nationally runs a median of $182–$390 by weight against $100–$175 for communal, a gap of about $100 at the entry tier. The premium buys one thing: your pet alone in the chamber, with the identification needed to return their ashes to you.

Pet cremation isn’t the most transparent industry, and the provider you choose decides what happens to your pet.
In most of the country, private is the provider's own word and nothing more — no licence, no inspection, no regulator. New York is the exception. A pet crematorium operating for a fee holds a Pet Cemetery and Pet Crematorium licence, the Department of State can investigate complaints, and you can ask for the number. Almost nowhere else can you check.
Across the 1,224 providers in our 2026 review, just 63 hold IAOPCC accreditation — the one pet-specific standards body in the industry. That is not an accusation; most providers are careful people doing difficult work well. It means the assurance behind the word private is usually the provider's own, so the questions you ask are the verification.
A heavier body takes longer in the chamber and burns more fuel, so most providers use two to four weight tiers. The spread between the lowest and highest tier on the same service commonly runs $100–$300, which is why asking for your pet's specific tier removes most of the uncertainty in one question.
Witnessed cremation typically adds $50–$200 over the standard private price, and custom urns or engraving run $50–$400 or more billed separately. None of this is a trick — but it is why two quotes that look far apart may describe the same service. Ask for one itemised all-in figure.

That is what private cremation should mean, and in most of the country the only thing standing behind it is the question you asked and the answer you got in writing. Ask it. A good provider will not mind.
Connect with our trusted Buffalo providerAmong New York providers that publish pricing, private (individual) cremation clusters around a median of $185–$412, with the full published range running $50–$600. Communal, where no ashes are returned, runs lower at $30–$375 published. Price tracks your pet's weight most of all — ask which tier your pet falls into and what that tier costs.
Not by itself, and it is worth being precise. General Business Law Article 35-C licenses the pet crematorium as a business and sets recordkeeping and operating rules, with the Department of State able to investigate complaints and act on a licence. That is far more than most states offer. But the licence governs the operator, not each individual cremation — so still ask, in writing, that your pet is the only animal in the chamber for the full cycle and that a numbered ID tag travels from pickup to return.
It is the sharpest contradiction in our dataset and we cannot explain it. New York gives pet owners more legal protection than almost any state, and just 4 of its 66 providers — 6% — publish a full price, the lowest rate on any of our city pages. Strong law, invisible prices. The practical consequence is that you should use the licence question and the price question separately: one is checkable, the other you will have to ask for.
It should mean your pet is the only animal in the chamber for the full cycle, and that the ashes returned are theirs. But no regulator defines the term in most of the country, and some providers use it for partitioned cremation — several pets in one chamber separated by dividers. Both are legitimate services at legitimate prices; the failure is only when the difference is not made clear. Ask the specific question rather than trusting the label.
Four questions, all reasonable, all worth asking in writing. Is my pet the only animal in the chamber for the full cycle? Do you use a numbered ID tag that stays with my pet from pickup to return, and will the number match the ashes? What documentation comes back? And may I witness it? A provider comfortable answering all four is telling you something useful — and many will offer before you ask.
Not necessarily, and it is worth checking rather than assuming. New York has 66 providers, but the state is large and Buffalo sits a long way from the downstate metro. Statewide figures — including the 15 providers offering aquamation — do not tell you what is reachable from Erie County. Ask a specific provider whether they serve the Buffalo area directly, and what pickup to your address costs, before treating a state-level number as local.
Yes, because it is one of the few genuinely checkable credentials in this industry. Under General Business Law Article 35-C a pet crematorium operating for a fee holds a Pet Cemetery and Pet Crematorium licence from the Department of State, and the Department can investigate complaints and act against a licence. Ask for the number. In 40-odd other states there is simply nothing to ask for.
