Maryland's Pet Cremation and Burial Services Consumer Protection Act takes effect 1 October 2026, and one of its requirements speaks directly to private cremation: providers must give owners written documentation including the type of cremation requested. Private cremation nationally runs a median of $182–$390 by weight against $100–$175 for communal, a gap of about $100 at the entry tier. The premium buys one thing: your pet alone in the chamber, with the identification needed to return their ashes to you.

Pet cremation isn’t the most transparent industry, and the provider you choose decides what happens to your pet.
Everywhere else in the country, whether your paperwork records that you asked for private cremation depends on the provider's goodwill. From 1 October in Maryland it is a statutory requirement, alongside registration with the state, identifying each animal, and keeping records for five years — enforced by the Attorney General, with repeat violations carrying up to $15,000 and three years.
Across the 1,224 providers in our 2026 review, just 63 hold IAOPCC accreditation — the one pet-specific standards body in the industry. That is not an accusation; most providers are careful people doing difficult work well. It means the assurance behind the word private is usually the provider's own, so the questions you ask are the verification.
A heavier body takes longer in the chamber and burns more fuel, so most providers use two to four weight tiers. The spread between the lowest and highest tier on the same service commonly runs $100–$300, which is why asking for your pet's specific tier removes most of the uncertainty in one question.
Witnessed cremation typically adds $50–$200 over the standard private price, and custom urns or engraving run $50–$400 or more billed separately. None of this is a trick — but it is why two quotes that look far apart may describe the same service. Ask for one itemised all-in figure.

Pet cremation coverage across Baltimore County.
That is what private cremation should mean, and in most of the country the only thing standing behind it is the question you asked and the answer you got in writing. Ask it. A good provider will not mind.
Connect with our trusted Baltimore providerAmong Maryland providers that publish pricing, private (individual) cremation clusters around a median of $260–$360, with the full published range running $150–$970. Communal, where no ashes are returned, runs lower at $100–$880 published. Price tracks your pet's weight most of all — ask which tier your pet falls into and what that tier costs.
It goes further than any other state we cover, and it is worth being precise about what it does. From 1 October 2026 the Act requires providers to register with the state, identify each animal in their care, give owners written documentation including the type of cremation requested, return remains in a respectful and orderly way, and keep records for five years — with the Attorney General enforcing. That documented cremation type and animal identification is exactly what verifying private depends on. It is not a guarantee that no provider will ever fail; it is a legal obligation and a record trail where most states have neither.
Because of a documented case. A Baltimore County operator took money from grieving families for cremations he did not perform, returning materials such as sand and concrete powder instead of ashes; he was sentenced to 20 years. We name the county and the conduct because both are matters of public record, and not the individual. The law that followed is unusually strong precisely because the failure it responded to was so complete.
It should mean your pet is the only animal in the chamber for the full cycle, and that the ashes returned are theirs. But no regulator defines the term in most of the country, and some providers use it for partitioned cremation — several pets in one chamber separated by dividers. Both are legitimate services at legitimate prices; the failure is only when the difference is not made clear. Ask the specific question rather than trusting the label.
Four questions, all reasonable, all worth asking in writing. Is my pet the only animal in the chamber for the full cycle? Do you use a numbered ID tag that stays with my pet from pickup to return, and will the number match the ashes? What documentation comes back? And may I witness it? A provider comfortable answering all four is telling you something useful — and many will offer before you ask.
It comes down to one question: do you want the ashes back? If yes, private is the only service that returns them. If no, communal is an honest choice at a national median of $100–$175, and no lesser goodbye — a great many families choose it, and providers handle it with the same care. What we would push back on is being sold private at a moment you cannot think clearly, on the unspoken suggestion that the cheaper option is unkind. It is not.
