Maryland has just become one of the best-protected states in the country for pet owners, and the law is so new that most families have not heard of it. Our 2026 study of 1,224 U.S. providers put the national median for private cremation between $183 and $390 by weight, with communal around $100–$175. Your pet is the only one in the chamber, and the ashes returned belong to your pet alone. Most Baltimore families choose this when they plan to keep their pet’s ashes.

Of the 10 Maryland providers we reviewed in 2026, 3 published full pricing online. Pricing genuinely varies by weight and service — but the result is that you do not know what you will pay until you are already on the phone, on the worst day of your year.
A 10-pound cat and a 90-pound dog do not cost the same to cremate — a heavier body takes longer in the chamber and burns more fuel. Most providers use two to four weight tiers, and the spread between the low and high tier on the same service commonly runs $100–$300.
The new Act requires the type of cremation you requested to be recorded in writing, each animal to be identified, and records kept for five years. If you are arranging a cremation in Baltimore after 1 October 2026, ask for that documentation — it is your entitlement under state law, not a favour, and the Attorney General enforces it.
Vet clinics often bundle cremation into the euthanasia invoice. It is genuinely convenient at a moment when arranging it yourself is close to unthinkable — but it sometimes carries a markup, and you are free to arrange your own provider instead.

Maryland's Act took effect because of a documented Baltimore County case in which an operator took payment for cremations he never performed and returned materials such as sand and concrete powder; he was sentenced to 20 years. Ask for your written documentation. Baltimore pet cremation pricing is not standardised — but it is not a mystery either. Plan from what is real, and reach the provider we would trust with our own pet when you are ready.

Because they are not required to. In our 2026 review of 10 Maryland providers, 3 — 30% — published full pricing, and 40% published none at all. Pricing genuinely varies by weight and service type, which is part of the reason. But the effect is that you cannot compare before you engage.
Yes, as of 2026, and strongly. Maryland enacted the Pet Cremation and Burial Services Consumer Protection Act (HB 564, Chapter 547), effective 1 October 2026. It requires pet cremation businesses to register with the state, identify each animal in their care, give owners written documentation including the type of cremation requested, return remains in a respectful and orderly way, and keep records for five years. The Attorney General's office enforces it, and a repeat violation can carry a fine of up to $15,000 and up to three years in prison.
Not from any provider in our review — 0 of the 10 Maryland providers we reviewed offer aquamation. Aquamation is a gentler water-based alternative to flame cremation. It is not reliably cheaper; nationally our medians for the two overlap.
Generally yes, subject to local rules. Maryland sets no statewide depth or setback specifically for companion-animal burial, so the binding rule is Baltimore County or City ordinance depending on where you live. Keep the grave well away from wells and watercourses and deep enough to deter wildlife, and check your local code before you dig.
