Cat Age Calculator

Enter your cat's age to see it in human years — using the veterinary method, not the old "multiply by 7" myth. A cat's first year is about 15 human years and the second adds about 9 more; after that, each year adds roughly 4. You'll also see your cat's life stage, from kitten to senior.

Why "multiply by 7" doesn't work for cats

Cats pack a lot of growing up into their first two years — a one-year-old cat is closer to a 15-year-old human than a 7-year-old — and then settle into a slower, steadier pace. A flat seven-times rule gets those early years badly wrong, which is why the veterinary approach front-loads the first two years and eases off afterward.

How a cat's age actually works

  • Year one ≈ 15 human years. A 1-year-old cat is essentially a teenager.
  • Year two adds about 9 more — so a 2-year-old cat is roughly 24.
  • Every year after that adds about 4 human years. A 10-year-old cat is around 56; a 15-year-old, around 76.

Cat life stages

Vets generally group a cat's life like this:

  • Kitten: under 1 year
  • Young adult: 1–6 years
  • Mature adult: 7–10 years
  • Senior: 11–14 years
  • Geriatric: 15+ years

Senior doesn't mean unwell — it means worth watching closely. If your cat is there, our free quality-of-life calculator scores the seven areas vets weigh, and our guide on the signs a cat is declining explains which changes are routine and which need a vet now. If you've recently lost your cat, what to do when your cat dies walks through the next steps, gently.
