Free, Vet-School-Run Pet-Loss Helplines

Tufts and Cornell run no-cost pet-loss support lines, staffed by trained veterinary-community volunteers. Real, non-commercial help — for people who feel they shouldn't be grieving this hard.

If the loss of a pet has hit you harder than you expected, you are not overreacting, and you do not have to carry it alone or pay someone to talk it through. Two veterinary schools run free pet-loss support lines. We checked both directly. We take no money for listing them — this is a pointer, not a product.

Tufts University. The Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine runs a Pet Loss Support Helpline at 508-839-7966. Its page lists hours of 6 to 9 p.m. EST, Monday through Thursday, with 24-hour voicemail outside those windows. It is staffed by volunteers, described on the site as “a caring, supportive, respectful, non-judgmental person.”

Cornell University. The College of Veterinary Medicine runs a Pet Loss Support Hotline at 607-218-7457. Its page lists hours of 6 to 9 p.m. EST Monday through Friday, and 12 to 9 p.m. EST Saturday and Sunday. It is “staffed by volunteer veterinary students who have undergone extensive training with professional grief counselors,” and is maintained primarily by private donations.

Two honest caveats. First, hours and numbers drift — confirm them on each school’s own page (linked below) before you call. Second, and more important: these are peer support lines, not mental-health crisis services. They are for grief, not emergencies. If you or someone you love is in real distress or thinking about self-harm, call or text the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline — it is free and available 24/7.

Grief over an animal is real grief. People who have spent their lives around animals built these lines precisely because they know that.
